Shawn Rose and North Hardin begin their district title defense tonight at Meade County.

Shawn Rose and North Hardin begin their district title defense tonight at Meade County.

The goal, always, is for the North Hardin High School football team to hoist a Class 6-A, District 2 championship trophy every November.

That’s what the Trojans have done the last four years.

Beginning at 7:30 tonight on the road, North Hardin (3-3) begins its bid for a fifth straight title at Meade County

“I think without a doubt our district is one of the most competitive; I think on any given night any of our district teams can beat another team in our district,” North Hardin head coach Brent Thompson said.

The Trojans have reeled off nine straight wins in the series, including victories in the state playoffs the last two seasons.

Meade County (2-4) has lost its last two games to Apollo (55-54 in overtime) and to Bullitt East (42-28).

“We need to come ready to play this Friday and then against Barren and Central Hardin,” Thompson said. “I have tried to schedule tough games because we need to be ready for tough games in our district and then in the playoffs.”

Central Hardin (5-1) hosts Barren County (4-2) tonight at 8 in district play.

The Trojans are coming off a 65-14 loss at powerful and unbeaten Boyle County. Other North losses have come against Bowling Green (5-1) and DuPont Manual (6-0).

Thompson said his team has learned, even in defeat.

“Obviously, our schedule is very tough and I think that our kids have been able to get better in so many ways through the first six games of the year,” he said. “We have competed at times with several top teams in the state and in our losses, we have been able to take something away from the loss and learn from it.

“We want to win every time we step on the field, but you can always learn from a setback,” he added. “Each side of the ball has areas to get better in and I feel like we have started to figure out our identity.”

The Trojans were limited to just 32 offensive plays last week.

North Hardin will face a Green Wave team that is averaging 31.3 points a game and allowing 34 points per outing.

Senior quarterback Andrew Millay has thrown for 1,004 yards and 11 touchdowns, while completing nearly 60% of his passes. He also has rushed for 294 yards and seven scores. Senior running back Jacob Lacefield has gained 585 yards and scored eight TDs on the ground.

“Coach (Larry) Mofield does a tremendous job and Meade has gotten better each week,” Thompson said. “Last week, they played a top ten team very closely and had a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. They are able to throw the ball, and of course, Meade is going to run the ball. Their defense is a bunch of hard-nosed players who run well to the football.”
