MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Liu Chuanxing has signed on as a foundation player with the Bay Area Dragons in the East Asia Super League after leaving his mark in Australia, where he was known as Big Liu.
A 2.25-meter (7-foot-5), 22-year-old center for China’s national team, Liu was among the first 10 players signed for the new Dragons franchise that will represent Greater China in the EASL but will be based in Manila in Season 1 and also compete in the Philippines league.

Olympic silver medalist Fred Kerley won the 100 meters at the U.S. outdoor track and field championships Friday night. Kerley crossed the line in 9.77 seconds, followed by Marvin Bracy-Williams and Trayvon Bromell. All three earned spots on the U.S. team for world outdoor championships in Eugene next month. Melissa Jefferson of Coastal Carolina, who finished eighth in the 100 at this year's NCAA outdoor championships, edged Aleia Hobbs in the women’s event.
Javier Báez hit a grand slam to quiet a fan in the front row and homer for the third straight game, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Báez homered in consecutive games against Boston and launched his seventh career grand slam off Merrill Kelly in the third inning of Detroit’s first game in Arizona since 2017. Báez didn’t watch as the ball sailed deep into the left field seats, turning instead to emphatically drop his bat while looking at a fan sitting near the on-deck circle. He circled the bases and, after high-fiving teammates, pointed to the fan before putting a shushing finger to his lips
The Tampa Bay Lightning spoiled Colorado’s party and they are still in the hunt for a third straight Stanley Cup title after beating the Avalanche 3-2 in Game 5. Ondrej Palat scored with 6:22 remaining and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 35 shots in front of a raucous crowd hoping to celebrate the Avalanche’s first championship in 21 years. The Cup was all shined up and in the building, too. It’s heading back to Tampa for Game 6 on Sunday night, with the Lightning down 3-2 in the best-of-seven series. Nikita Kucherov and Jan Rutta also scored for the Lightning. Valeri Nichushkin and Cale Makar had goals for Colorado.

Alejandro Kirk went 4 for 4 and homered for the third straight game before leaving with a bruised left hand in the seventh inning of the Toronto Blue Jays’ 9-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Kirk appeared to get hit in the hand on a backswing from Jonathan Davis in the seventh. The catcher remained in the game for the rest of that at-bat before leaving at the same time the Blue Jays made a pitching change. The team said Kirk underwent precautionary X-rays that came back negative.
Justin Verlander pitched four-hit ball over seven innings, Kyle Tucker hit a three-run homer and the Houston Astros beat the Yankees 3-1 to stop New York’s 15-game home winning streak. Hours after Aaron Judge agreed to a $19 million, one-year contract with the Yankees that avoided an arbitration hearing, New York was greeted with loud ovations by just its third home sellout crowd this season. Judge went 0 for 4 as the major league-best Yankees lost for just the fourth time in their last 23 games overall. Verlander averaged 95.5 mph with his fastball, up from 94.8 mph coming in during his first season since Tommy John surgery.

Ryan Preece won for the second straight year at Nashville Superspeedway and gave David Gilliland Racing its second consecutive NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory Friday night. Preece shot ahead on the final restart with nine laps left and held off fellow Ford driver Zane Smith. Preece has made only eight Truck starts, winning both of the series’ events on the 1.33-mile oval. He also has won twice on the Xfinity Series. The 31-year-old Preece, from Berlin, Connecticut, is a reserve driver for Stewart-Haas Racing. He’s racing a limited scheduled in NASCAR’s top three series. Cup driver Todd Gilliland won for his father’s team last week in Iowa on the dirt at Knoxville Raceway.
Josh Bell hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning of his return home as the Washington Nationals beat the Texas Rangers 2-1. Bell is from nearby Irving, Texas. He also had a triple and double, and scored Washington’s only other run. The Nationals played their first interleague game at Texas in 17 years. Adolis Garcia homered and had his sixth outfield assist of the season for the Rangers. Texas had won its previous six interleague games. Carl Edwards worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the victory. Bell's winning hit came off reliever Dennis Santana.
