New Delhi: When the Taliban marched in the sky in Kandahar, Afghanistan, a video and screenshots of a man "hanging" on a helicopter were widely circulated on social media. According to reports, this 12-second video clip swept the Internet and claimed that it showed “the Taliban driving an American Black Hawk helicopter with a corpse hanging on it.” According to reports, the title of the video was misleading. This viral video clip shows a helicopter hovering over a building in the city, and then the video zooms in and shows that a person is suspended by ropes from the helicopter. The video was shared hours after the last U.S. troops withdrew from Afghanistan, leaving as many as 200 Americans and hundreds of desperate Afghans. However, a report by the BBC and another report by the independent fact-checking organization Alt News clarified that it can be seen that the man hanging on the rope is a Taliban fighter and is still alive. Moreover, according to multiple Afghan news media reports, the Taliban fighters are actually trying to raise a flag in the governor's office in Kandahar. "Further footage and still photos show that the man flying over Kandahar is very active. These photos show him wearing the diver winch of a Black Hawk helicopter and waving the Taliban flag," the BBC report said. In an interview with the BBC, several Afghan experts quoted Taliban sources as saying that the hovering helicopter was shot down to fix a flag on a public building with their newly captured American-made equipment.

Here are some tweets related to helicopters hovering over Kandahar by Taliban fighters:

The video received more than 2 million views in a single day. It was originally posted on Twitter by a counter-terrorism expert. According to reports, he was not sure what the video described. Then, the Taliban's claim that the U.S.-provided helicopter used a helicopter to hang someone after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghan territory spread like wildfire on social media.

At the same time, local journalist Sadiqullah Afghan also posted a video on Twitter, which showed a man being hung on a helicopter. He informed that the man was a Taliban and tried to plant a flag on the 100-meter pole.

Another Afghan journalist said on Twitter that he knew the Afghan pilot who flew the Black Hawk helicopter. He confirmed that the man who was hoisted in the helicopter was a Taliban fighter and tried to install the Taliban flag from the air, but was unsuccessful.

The Afghan pilot piloted this is someone I have known for many years. He has received training in the United States and the UAE, and he confirmed to me that he is flying a Black Hawk helicopter. The Taliban fighters seen here tried to install the Taliban flag from the air, but ultimately failed. https://t.co/wnF8ep1zEl

Even the editor and fact-checker of The Washington Post, Glenn Kessler, talked on Twitter about how the entire story was distorted on the Internet. Take a look:

Here is how things on the Internet have become distorted. Do you know that pictures of people hanging by the Taliban on Black Hawk helicopters can be seen everywhere on Twitter? Just put on makeup. It's not that the video is from "FJ"-@natsecjeff1, but this is not what his original video says... pic.twitter.com/Swb0FIGmXR

Well-trained helicopter winch operators in the United States usually wear a ring at the back, and in poor quality video clips, it can easily be mistaken for a lasso. Moreover, we guess that this is what happened with this viral video clip. However, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and HM Coast Guard divers will wear the ring in front of them.
