Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles Receives Highest Shipping Award-HOIST Magazine

The Containerization and Multimodal Transportation Institute (CII) has awarded its highest honor, the Connie Award, to Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles.

The award aims to recognize outstanding leadership and achievements, as well as to promote the development of the industry and its priorities.

"Gene is a world-renowned supply chain expert and experienced industry leader," said Jaime Lee, chairman of the Los Angeles Seaport Commission.

"His enthusiasm for the maritime industry, his ethics, integrity and transparency... and his desire to strengthen supply chain flexibility, workforce training, student scholarships, new technologies and cargo throughput.

"Everyone at the Port of Los Angeles is very grateful for working with you," she told Seroka. "The global shipping industry is fortunate to have you become one of the most respected leaders. The Connie Award presented by CII today is to recognize you."

At the awards ceremony in New Jersey, USA, Seroka took this opportunity to thank and thank his industry colleagues, the leaders of the City of Los Angeles, and the nearly 900 employees of the Los Angeles Seaport Authority.

"It means they accepted the award humbly," Seroka said. "Today is more than just one person. Today is about how our industry supports the United States of America and beyond. At this important moment, it has never been more obvious how we serve this country... Countless American families depend on the global trade we promote ."

In the name of Seroka, CII provided $1,500 in student scholarships to EXP, a non-profit organization that works closely with the Port of Los Angeles to provide maritime-related education and employment opportunities. Seroka also took this opportunity to announce that he personally donated $1,500 to Juneteenth 400, a non-profit organization based in San Pedro, which organizes an event to commemorate the June Festival holiday and the end of slavery every year. It was held at the Port of Los Angeles for the first time this year.

CII was established in 1960, and its mission is to promote and support the international trade business and the multimodal container transportation industry. As a non-profit organization, CII raises industry awareness by organizing educational conferences and seminars, arranging internships, and promoting scholarships to increase industry awareness, preserve the history of multimodal transportation, and attract academic interest in this field.

As the leading seaport in North America in terms of container throughput and cargo value, the Port of Los Angeles has facilitated US$259 billion in trade in 2020. The integrated operation and commerce of the San Pedro Bay Port has promoted one-ninth of employment opportunities and Ventura in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.
